👣 I need new running shoes! 👣
How are you doing today? I'm good, thanks for asking. (You did ask, didn't you?) Admittedly, I've been a little self-involved recently with Dead and Buried coming out, so I'm a little behind on what's new with you. If you reply and let me know we can have a conversation about it. And you'll get a proper reply––not just an uh-huh-that's-nice-now-go-away-because-I'm-doing-book-stuff which is pretty much the reply EVERYONE received these past few weeks.
And we're not just talking email replies either. (Although, happily, hardly anyone emailed me during this time!) Like, real life answers, too. For example:
Person: Excuse me, do you know where the nearest bus stop is?
Me: I'm sorry. Did you say something? I couldn't hear you because MY NEW BOOK IS COMING OUT NEXT WEEK!!!!
If it was socially acceptable to have hung a sign around my neck that said "I'm preoccupied, please come back and try again in a week" I would've done it.
Admittedly, this isn't showing you the most flattering side to my personality, but we all get stressed out, right? (Hint: I'm looking for a "yes" here.)
And then you've got those people that are all like "I really don't know what you're getting so stressed out over––it's only a book/test/nuclear war". Or the ones that tell you everything is going to be okay and it will all work out. And rational you knows this is true ... but stressed you? Stressed you responds like this ...
You can relate to this, right? It's not just me? And I think the worst part of it all is that, when it's not me that's crazy stressing, I'm one of those "Look, don't freak out, okay? It's only a nuclear war that will wipe out all life on the planet. We'll either die quickly in the initial blast or we'll survive but mutate. Hey, maybe we'll grow wings!" type of people. The type that I hate when I'm stressing out.
How do you combat stress? I'd really like to be one of those people who meditate, but I'm usually stressing because I don't have enough time so sitting in silence to try and calm myself down would likely send me into a tail spin.
What do you do when you're stressed? How do you combat it? I used to run. I'm tentatively trying to take it back up again because the stress up to releasing Dead and Buried nearly killed me. I put on my old running trainers and suddenly it was like I was walking on air. They were so soft and bouncy. You remember I live in England, right? So I mostly wear some form of boots so this was a lovely change.
I was thinking I'd treat myself to a new pair, but there are, like, a million different types. Under pronation. Over pronation. Neutral. Cushioned. Gel soles. The list goes on!
There's a running shop in town so I was thinking I might go in and ask them for help but they have a treadmill in the middle of the store where they "analyse" your gait. I'm pretty sure I run like Phoebe from Friends and while I have no problem running down the road like this I doubt a treadmill could contain me. So maybe I won't ...
Anyway, long story short, I'm feeling fairly stress-free at the moment. I'm working on a new series, but since I have no specific deadlines for it, I'm just enjoying writing it. Which is nice.
So, what's going on with you?
PS. What do you do for stress relief? Can you give me some pointers? Preferably cheaper than a new pair of trainers 'cause they're EX-pensive!
